The payor implications of this picture are significant:

  • Clearly, selecting an overpriced test and an inappropriate mode of treatment that fails 50% of the time is a waste of money.  In addition, the fact that most patients are not managed into an alternative treatment, allowing both the OSA and its comorbid disease to progress unchecked, makes it even worse.

Within ProAct’s integrated delivery solution, over 95% of patients will be tested in the convenience of their own bed by a Home Sleep Test administered by ProAct; and the diagnosis and recommended course of treatment is determined by a Certified Sleep Specialist.  Approximately 70% of patients, who have mild to moderate OSA (AHI of 5-29) with no extenuating factors, are typically prescribed an Oral Appliance (OA), which is tolerated by over 90% of patients. OAs are fitted by a ProAct dentist who is trained in oral appliance therapy and credentialed by the accredited ProAct Provider Health Network.

For the 30% who have severe OSA, ProAct’s DME Division supplies a Positive Airway Pressure (PAP) device and manages compliance. If the patient proves to be intolerant, they are referred to a ProAct Provider Health Network dentist to receive a OA, rather than drop out of care.
